This document contains a full description and a rationale for the Elements and Attributes in the DTD. The descriptions in this list follow the outline of the DTD and XML document template. To search for a term alphabetically, see the alphabetical listing.
All tags defined here are !ELEMENTs in the DTD. Information about the !ATTRIBUTE list accompanies the tag.
R=required; A=authored, has the enAuthor attribute, which gives the name of the individual entering the information in the formal First Initial. Last name (ex: J. Drucker).
work In this project, each artist's book is divided into three levels of information: work, edition, and object. Work is the highest, and most general, level of information. The work should be thought of in the broadest possible terms, as including all the elements pertaining to conception, production, editions, reception history, and so on. The next level, the edition, contains more specific publication information and physical description. Each work can contain multiple editions. In many cases, however, there will only be one edition. The next level is the object level. This is the most specific, and gives information only about the particular book object that is being used to enter the information; this includes specifics regarding inscriptions, condition, location, etc.R
id=unique 4 letter identifier for each work. For example, emrg (Emerging Sentience)
title Holds the titleProper and note fields. The title section can be repeated for subtitles or multiple titles, but remember that this is at the work level, which means that it should be the title of the entire project; specific edition information is not necessary.R
titleProper The title by which the work is known. This is the largest category and so might be "The Dark Project" or "Particle Series" rather than the name of a single edition or book object. R
note Notes can be used to add any additional, clarifying or qualifying information. This field appears throughout the DTD, and can be repeated as necessary.A
agents Wraps information about every agent involved in the work.R
agent Wraps information about each individual agent, including: role, nationality or location, dates, and note. It is important to realize that an agent can be either a person (artist, author, etc.) or an institution (press, gallery, etc.)R

thumbnail An image and caption representative of the work, and/or a critical gloss on the image meant to be part of a top level record display. The thumbnail might be called, along with its caption and gloss, into exhibits or displays independent of any of the longer information in the file. Best is to think of the thumbnail plus caption plus gloss as an independent unit. Think of this as an image and text(s) that might function when the critical analysis wasn't present.
image The file name of a representative image of the work.
caption A succinct caption to go along with the image.
critGloss A critical statement glossing the thumbnail image. This is here so that someone could make an exhibit of thumbnails, captions, and critGloss elements; it is meant to provide a stand-alone text, if no other text about the work, edition, or object were present.A
