Production Narrative

Critical Analysis

by J.Drucker

Design Features

typographic: Variations in size of font and whether or not the font is boldface, italicized, or normal. The serif font is used for narration, and a san serif set in all caps is used for the page of factual information.

imagery: Postcards, photographs, and satellite images in sequence and combination. These changes frame the narrative within a large scale perspective.

graphical: The formats are fairly simple, with captions under the uniformly sized images.

openings: Printed on the recto only, so openings are static and regular.

turnings: The subtle shifts of tone and scale register as the turnings unfold.

development: The frame changes of the narrative and image staging keep this work alive, it shifts as it goes along, calling perception, cliche, and myth into relation with each other.

sequence: Snitzer has a good sense of timing, and he uses this to advantage in structuing sequences that are lively in their integration of conception and production issues.

Critical Discussion

This is a fine piece of conceptual work, executed to demonstrate its idea of the gradual change of scale from arial view into a slide show format that uses the forms of living room accounts of touristic travels. An unusual visual combination of cut-out images from hand-tinted post cards and textures from the surface of the earth from air create a distinct distance between the straight tone of the account and the effect of the image and text.
