Production Narrative
by D. Frid
The fist edition of this book was made in 1996 after I had moved to New York City. Years later, in Chicago, I read the following phrase, “ A book is a sequence of moments”. These words, Ulises Carrión’s, resonate precisely with what this book does. The book’s sequences of moments are constructed with sewn layers of cloth and an image (an iron transfer) on the top layer that recurs in every spread. The generic image of a hunter was found in a pictorial English-Spanish dictionary. I drew the image of the target to go with the gunman. I used iron-on heat transfers to apply the images to the polka dot cloth. On the right side, shapes of “gunfire” stemming from the hunter’s rifle spread with each turn of the page. On the left side of the spread, holes begin to accrue as the pages increase. We know where this is going, heading: with its futile violence and its noise (the noise is loosely described on the verso side of each spread by the holes). There are three existing copies of the book: a first edition of one (1996), and a second edition of 2 (2002). Each hand made copy varies slightly from the other.
Critical Analysis

Design Features
typographic: The tension of the "vexed" object is heightened by the patiently rendered embroidered text
imagery: The images are deceptively simple; the contrast of the visible handwork with the graphic prints (both the transfers and the fabric pattern) offers remarkable depth
turnings: The opposition of the printed polka dots on the rectos with the increasing "noise" holes on the versos sets up a powerful tension
scultpural features: The compact, padded flannel spine of the book is much narrower than the text block, creating an endearingly quirky silhouette that belies the violence of the narrative
Just Wait and See
title note: Inside front cover reads, "Just Wait and See A Vexed Book by D. Frid" [S. Strang]

In 1995, the Artery Archives moved to New York City where it began to produce one-of-a-kind bookworks and small multiples based on or related to larger sculptural works. The Artery Archives Press and Dianna Frid relocated to Chicago in the summer of 1999. [S. Strang/D. Frid]
