Joan Lyons is a master book designer and a very talented narrator and editor. To work with her was an immense pleasure. Our spirited conversations in Rochester concerning photography, memory, American culture, the arts and education are still a reference and an inspiration for me. I also remember the verdant landscape of upstate New York, the beauty of ivy-covered stone walls and the ever-present perfume of lilacs in bloom. VSW was, and still is, a pioneer in the media arts. As an artist, collaborating with VSW on a project, teaching or taking a Summer course at the center or even subscribing to Afterimage is being a part of the ongoing Visual Studies Workshop legacy of building an international community of people exploring word and image.
