Critical Analysis
by E. Rettberg
Design Features
typographic: In the sections of found text, various blocks of text designate different simultaneous historical narratives.
imagery: In the photographic section, the outlines of title pages of various slave narratives hover over pictures of the road, ghostlike in their ability to remind us of our links to an oft-forgotten past.
graphical: At the end of the book, abstract images of skulls and crossbones, coffins, and other artifacts are superimposed on pictures of the march and the police reaction.
Critical Discussion
The book revisits the site of an important historical moment for the civil rights movement, using evocations of the place and its various histories to intertwine past and present, innocent and guilty.
