Production Narrative
by A. Denes
Isometric Systems in Isotropic Space—Map Projections is a beautiful book. I did abut 29 original drawings for this book, and it tested the quality of production done by Visual Studies Workshop and Joan Lyons’ printing ability. There are dozens of transparent pages with drawings in the book, that fit over other drawings on either side of the page. That is perfect registration, printing and binding. This was thirty-one years ago. I was not experienced as I am today and didn’t realize the gem we had created. Of course we didn’t print a lot of books and when Joan insisted on pricing this book I worked so hard on, as well as she, for $15.00 I was shocked. 29 original drawings, all those transparent pages, all the work! Agnes, she said, artists’ books never sell. This will, I exclaimed, but Joan smiled and thought it was just my ego. But the book did sell out fairly quickly and we could have sold ten times the 800 copies printed. Of course there was to reprinting. When I found out that the book was sold for a collector for $975.00 at auction, I was the one who smiled and brought the news to my friend. Now it was Joan’s turn to concede and she graciously raised the price a few dollars.I want to find this opportunity to thank Joan for her vision, talent and sticking with a profession that she may have loved, but it took her away from her personal art, although this was probably her art. She should be acknowledged as a master at what she did, producing beautiful artists’ books. I cherish our friendship through the years, and wish she could just print up a thousand more of my books.
