Project Statement

by S. Strang

AnneDorothee Böhme initially conceived of the Consistency of Shadows exhibition as an effort to raise patron awareness about the collection of unusual and interesting catalogs housed in the Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As the concept took shape, Böhme —an artist as well as a special collections librarian— collaborated with her artist/designer husband and creative partner Kevin Henry to develop the unique, interactive gallery environment and the award-winning catalog. The Betty Rymer Gallery at the School of the Art Institute was the venue for the exhibition in 2003, and gallery director Trevor Martin supported the collaborators by promoting and selling the catalog pre-publication to raise the necessary funds for the production of a visionary, multimedia object. The relationship between this exhibition and its own catalog is a many-layered model for the complexity of projects that explore, as Böhme writes in her introductory essay for the catalog, "how to re-collect a past event and how to re-connect to it with minimal interference." Included in the catalog are contributions by writer and independent curator Mary Jane Jacob (Chicago); Barbara Moore, art historian, dealer, and proprietor of Bound & Unbound in NYC; Chicago-based private collector Alan Cravitz; and art critic and editor of White Walls, Anthony Elms (Chicago). Also included is an essay by Böhme, as well as a transcript and video excerpts of her 2002 interview for the exhibition with Paris-based artist Christian Boltanski.
