Project Statement

by J. Drucker

This book documents the recovery of a lost object, a purse, and Lyons' rethinking of her own relation to the original events that had taken place twenty-five years earlier. The book's production involved the scanning of the purse (direct photography) and its contents, and the sensitivity to the material quality of that artifact and its contents is brought into almost excruciating focus in the author's self-conscious and self-critical reflection. Conception and production are well-matched in this project, and the text's flow above and below the images provides just enough tension to split the reader into a sympathetic relation to the author's own account. This is also an exemplary work for its use of digital technology in all phases of production.
