Production Narrative
by T. Shaw
The photographs of this book probably span from the 1970's through the mid 1980's and a small, silver-gelatin edition were most likely printed in the artist's personal darkroom. 300 line Duotones from the negatives were made and printed by Brad Freeman at the Visual Studies Workshop Press, Rocheste, New York
Critical Analysis
by T. Shaw
Design Features
typographic: Photographs of vernacular typography is present through spray-painted graffiti, stencils, handmade and printed signage
imagery: Lyons' signature dark graininess is present as well as his "effortless" compositional form referencing snapshots
graphical: The design is straightforward, one black-and-white photograph per page, in the center (with bottom weighted) on a white paper background
openings: Each spread contains two facing photographs and is consistent throughout
turnings: Consistent throughout
development: Visual modality though utilizing verbal findings in each photograph
sequence: Lyons works with sequential structures so photographs will lead thematically and visually into the next utilizing a visual flow or sometimes making references to previous photographs providing circular structures
intratextual: The largely human-made elements presented are subtly commented on two distinct instances through the somewhat subversive use of the natural landscape including the book's conclusion
Critical Discussion
This book is unique in its perspective on nature, time, individual and civic virtue, all of which are commented on with a great deal of dry wit and humor
